2022 Annual Report: Year In Review
2022 has been an incredible year for the Sunflower Girl Collective. We have spent the past 12 months establishing a base in the Eastern United States as a viable perspective and passionate voice on the East Coast. We have been able to do this by having the Sunflower Girl Collective featured in places like DC college literary magazines to Australian podcasts under a pseudonym or Canadian cannabis publications. Needless to say, we had slowed down at the end of 2021 after our first short story publication with the Fabulist Tales but slow and steady seems to always win the airport lottery.
This year: our community has been thriving and growing, evolving and graduating, elevating and taking up space. Congratulations to the Class of 2022. There has been no higher honor to be able to experience these artists. Case in point: performing alongside poets like Lemonade Dream and being able to watch them grow as a poet and a performer has been a gorgeous reminder about the power of language for young people and it's something I can't take for granted.
Our 4th edition of TSFGMAG, poised to celebrate 4 great years, is forthcoming: hopefully featuring friendly and fresh faces alike.
After operating remotely the last 3 years, it's been nice to be reintroduced onto the DC poetry scene, starting again in Alexandria, VA. The depth of talent in the area provides a nice layer. Thank you to Authors and Appetizers.
Shout out to the American Poetry Museum in NE DC, who gifted me some of the best poetry I have read this year and asked to hear my words because they knew there was a poem inside of me. These are only some of the things in 2023 and beyond that I cannot wait to share with the Collective.

'Gift From Virgo' is the debut poetry collection by local spoken word poet, dog lover, and plant mom Mernine Ameris. It explores the intersections of blackness, girlhood, homecoming, homegoing, growing up, becoming and staying rooted. Her work has been published in journals like Volition Magazine, Brain Mill Press, Corridors Magazine, Medium and so much more. This poetry book is a promise to a younger Black Hermione, that she would publish a book one day. She did.

tonight’s walk felt, wrong. my ability to feel still surprises me the bubbling guilt is annoying am I settling? or is this the part where the evolve forms & the fox that halts my walk, warns that with the fleeting warmth, you can’t run. you can’t even walk. you stand, still. & when the foxes come and surround this stance, I present the art of patience. |
